The Lion and the Mouse
A lion was asleep in the forest, with his great head resting on his paws. A shy little mouse came across him by accident and, in her hurry to get away, she ran across the lion's nose. The lion woke up and angrily put his huge paw on the tiny animal to kill her.
“Please don't kill me!” begged the mouse. “Let me go, and one day I will repay you.” The lion laughed at the idea that a mouse could ever help him. But he was generous, and in the end he let her go.
A few days later, while the lion was hunting in the forest, he was caught in a hunter's net. He couldn't get free, and he filled the forest with his angry roars. The mouse recognised his voice and quickly found him. She ran to one of the thick ropes that held him and chewed it until it broke. Soon the lion was free.
“You laughed when I said I would repay you,” said the mouse. “Now you can see that even a mouse can help a lion.”

The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf
A young shepherd looked after his master's sheep near a dark forest, not far from the village. He soon found life in the fields very boring. All he could do to pass the time was talk to his dog or play his pipe.
His master had told him to shout for help if a wolf ever attacked the sheep, and the villagers would come and chase it away. One day, although he hadn't seen anything that even looked like a wolf, the boy ran towards the village shouting “Wolf! Wolf!” as loudly as he could.
The villagers stopped working and ran to the field. But when they got there, they found the boy laughing at the trick he had played on them. A few days later he did the same thing, and again the villagers came running, only to be laughed at once more.
Then one evening, as the sun was going down, a wolf really did come out of the forest and attack the sheep. Terrified, the boy ran towards the village shouting “Wolf! Wolf!” The villagers heard him, but this time nobody came. “He can't fool us again,” they said. The wolf killed many of the sheep and then disappeared into the forest.
